Does Life Really Matter?
What do we see?
…Relentless bombings by rebel groups who make no
differentiation between the enemy and civilians;
…people including children, who are prepared to
strap bombs to their bodies and willingly destroy
their own lives and many others around them;
…militant attacks on hospitals, doctors and
emergency food convoys;
…the unwillingness by nations to help people fleeing
torture and death, who desperately flee their
homeland and end up drowning at sea;
…the twenty or so people who end their own lives in this country… each day,
because life is no longer bearable.
The list is endless. Many people all over the world, no longer see human life as
valuable, sacred or worthy of living. To them, life doesn’t matter at all.
But there is someone who thinks very differently about that. God.
He sees the value of human life very differently.11
Let’s be honest. God didn’t really need people. He has everything He needs. He
wants for nothing. Why would He need people? And why would He consider
Simply because of who He is. God is not selfish. He didn’t want to keep
everything just for Himself. He wanted to share the glories of His Kingdom with
someone else. So He created beings like Himself, who would like what He likes
and share His company. 2
Author David Benner wrote…
Human beings exist because of God's desire for companionship.
We are the fruit of God's love, reaching out towards creatures who
share enough similarity that relationship is possible.
Imagine that. A God who wants to have a personal relationship with His created
beings! If that doesn’t leave you speechless, I wonder what will?
But how do we know we are important to God?
A thirty second view of the nightly news, is
fairly convincing to most of us that life
probably doesn’t really matter at all.
… explore the possibilities
